Ntshengedzeni Ivy Mathuba (68), popularly known as “Daddy Long Legs”, has died at the age of 68 at his home in Tshisaulu on 28 April after a short illness. The former teacher was also a defender for Shayandima Bobs Stars and the Venda national team.
News of his death sent shockwaves through the community he served throughout his life. Mathuba leaves a significant void in the local soccer fraternity, having made a name for himself as one of the finest players produced by the former Venda homeland.
Soccer enthusiasts will remember him for his outstanding defensive skills, which made him a fan favourite during his playing days. On the field, he formed a strong partnership with players such as Khathutshelo Gogome, Zacharia Nelufule, Maanda Matodzi, Rooi Mbangiseni, Khathu Dzivhani and George Shirilele in the 1990s. He also captained Bobs Stars in a memorable match against Kaizer Chiefs in the Sparletta Challenge.
Family representative Jonathan Mathuba said the family was proud to have produced someone who contributed significantly to both sport and education. “We are saddened by his passing, but we believe God has taken him for a reason,” he said.
Former teammate Emmanuel “Msumba” Davhana described Mathuba as a dedicated community builder and educator. “He was larger than life and always there when we needed him. Now that he is gone, it is difficult to imagine anyone filling his shoes because he was truly irreplaceable,” he said.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, 8 May, at Calvary Church in Lwamondo. He will be laid to rest on Saturday, 9 May, in Tshisaulu, with the funeral service also taking place at Calvary Church at 06:00.
