A former Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows defender, Luvhengo "Papi" Mungomeni, launched the Mungomeni Soccer Challenge last week.
Eight teams, namely Rabali Pull Together, Mikhado, Matanda Rockers, Berea FC, United Artists, Dipeni FC, Tshivhidulu Hungry Lions and Mpheni Home Defenders, will participate in the tournament. The matches will be played at Rabali Stadium on 16 and 17 December.
Mungomeni said that he was ploughing back into the community and wanted to help to develop young players from grassroots level. He said that he was a proud supporter of local football development "and we undertook this sponsorship primarily to showcase our support for the sport".
He added that Limpopo was a province rich in talent and "we have over the years seen some talented South African soccer players being unearthed from this province".
The secretary of the Makhado LFA, Mr Freddy Phathela, described Mungomeni as "a selfless and caring community developer." He said it was painful to see that many businesspeople did not give anything back to the community.
He also encouraged youngsters to take education seriously and not to rush to make "a quick buck" before securing their future. He emphasised that education is the key that can open closed doors for a sportsman or artist.
The winners of the competition will receive R10 000, a floating trophy, new kit and medals, while the runners-up will receive R5 000, a kit and silver medals. The teams that end in the third and fourth position will get R2 500 and R2 000, bronze medals and kit.
