Just as he was a legend in broadcasting, iconic radio personality Mr Russel Mashige is now making waves in the world of praise singing.
The celebrated radio presenter, who captivated listeners at the then Radio Thohoyandou and later Radio Venda, began his praise-singing journey in 1988. Now retired from broadcasting, praise singing remains his passion and calling.
Widely known by his many aliases – Mbatata, Tshiendahongolo, Mukukululme Munyai Mukalanga and Mahambayedwa – Mashige continues to command deep respect and remains a prominent figure at cultural ceremonies, including chieftainship installations and corporate events.
His most recent performance was at Matsila village last week, where he ceremonially ushered in Chief Livhuwani Matsila. The veteran praise singer set the tone for the occasion, eloquently introducing the chief and his esteemed guests, leaving a lasting impression on attendees.
Mashige said praise singing was something that came naturally to him. "My talent became known in 1988 when I came to work at Radio Thohoyandou from the then Radio Venda. I started to praise the late President PR Mphephu through the then Radio Thohoyandou. I would praise him from his ancestors to his era," he said.
He added that he had praised all senior Vhavenda traditional leaders. "I am the only praise singer to have achieved that. And besides the live praise singing for the leaders, I also, in 2019, recorded a video clip in praise of President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa. The video trended widely. Just like the legend I was in broadcasting, I pride myself as a living legend in praise singing.
"But I will not rest in peace knowing I did not plant a seed that would carry my legacy forward. My wish is to train youths in praise singing as this is our culture. It must not become extinct – it gives our leaders the respect they deserve," he said.
