Joe Maweja registered their fourth successive victory when they beat Gawula Classic 1-0 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Saturday.
As if they were going to score an avalanche of goals, Maweja were unstoppable in the first 20 minutes. Their midfielders, Takalani Ramagalela, Khumbudzo Muvhango and Khongotela Mahlaule, kept on distributing telling passes to the strikers. The absence of Walter Netshimbulu, the Maweja scoring machine, was evident from the onset as the strikers seemed to have forgotten their scoring boots at home.
The referee, Mr Chris Mugeri, flashed only one card in the game. Ndwamato Ndou of Maweja was reprimanded with a yellow card, following a late tackle on Lyborn Maluleke in the 18th minute. Pfariso Mukoma of Maweja received a beautiful pass from Takalani Ramagalela in the 24th minute and fumbled with the ball within the box.
The goal that earned Maweja three league points came in the 29th minute. Takalani Ramagalela received a pre-cooked pass from Khumbudzo Muvhango within the box and beat the keeper with a ground cutter. The visitors from Giyani came close to scoring in the 39th minute. Musa Mabunda tried his luck from the edge of the box with a volley. The ball hit the crossbar and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.
The second half saw Classic pushing hard from behind in their search for an equalizer. At some stage, Maweja were forced to play defensive football as Classic were all over them. Classic effected three changes to their original lineup later in the game. They replaced Rophney Hlungwane, Musa Mabunda and Ivan Mathebula with Muxe Chaukem Bafana Nkgomo and Sbusiso Malope respectively.
