Actor and filmmaker Ndamulelo Mbuwe said his career in film and television has always been driven by storytelling rather than visibility, a principle that continues to shape his professional direction.
Although best known for his on-screen work, including his role on Muvhango, Mbuwe describes himself primarily as a filmmaker and storyteller. His passion extends beyond acting into directing and cinematic production, with a growing focus on wedding films and human-centred narratives.
His decision to pursue acting professionally began in his early teenage years. The defining moment came in 2013 when he secured his first role on the Phalaphala FM radio drama I Kho Khidzhana. That experience, he said, confirmed that acting could be pursued as a career rather than remaining a hobby.
Mbuwe attributed much of his confidence to his upbringing in church. He said the Prayer Tabernacle Church provided numerous youth programmes involving acting and performance, creating a supportive environment that nurtured his talent through encouragement and exposure.
After his character was written out of Muvhango, Mbuwe said he intentionally searched for a meaningful project to mark his return to the screen. He found that opportunity in Grade 10D, a production he said stood out because of its strong story, clear vision and committed creative team.
In the film, Mbuwe portrayed a charismatic yet troubled teenager who wielded influence among his peers while repeatedly clashing with authority. He described the character as admired within the school environment but ultimately destructive, representing the consequences of reckless decision-making.
Carrying the lead role brought significant pressure, he said, particularly given the talent involved and the investment behind the project. That pressure, however, became a source of motivation and a sense of responsibility to deliver an authentic performance.
Looking ahead, Mbuwe said his future lies increasingly behind the camera. Over the next five years, he envisions focusing on directing and creating opportunities for other actors, with acting limited to occasional cameo appearances.
