Funanani Tshithukhe (24), a gifted artist from Hamphego known for her pencil drawing skills, achieved a milestone when she won an art competition held at the Vhembe TVET College on 27 May.
Competing against both male and female artists, winning the competition has left her totally elated. "I felt incredibly privileged. This achievement truly serves as a testament to my unwavering dedication to my passion," she said.
Funanani's artistic journey began in 2018, while she attended Thivhilaeli Secondary School, and from there on she has put heart and soul into refining her skills. She especially loves to draw nature scenes, so her focus is on that when she gets creative. Her choice to depict wild animals, forest landscapes, and other non-human subjects goes beyond personal preference; she is making a deliberate effort to challenge certain norms. One of her goals is to uplift fellow artists by sharing her talent.
"I acknowledge that many women do not actively participate in the arats. Therefore, I aim to inspire them by embracing my own innate talents. Sharing my artwork is crucial, especially pieces that celebrate the wonders of nature," she said.
Funanani is currently in her second year studying primary agriculture at Mashamba TVET College. Like so many artists on the path to success, she too has encountered obstacles and moments of doubt while striving to achieve her aspirations. However, instead of succumbing to these challenges, she emerged stronger, gaining confidence and using them as fuel to enhance her artistic work. "With each stroke of my pencil, I get to share my unique perspective with art lovers, making my own contribution to the art community," she said.
