What started as one man’s dream to change the lives of disadvantaged children through cycling has gathered remarkable momentum after the Presidency donated 10 bicycles to his ambitious Road to 250 campaign.
Community cyclist Gift Mpho Nefolovhodwe returned home to a hero’s welcome over the weekend following his inspiring cycling journey from Madombidzha to Cape Town, a mission aimed at collecting 250 bicycles for children who cannot afford them.
His homecoming celebrations began on Saturday, 18 July, at Madombidzha Mall, where hundreds of well-wishers, traditional leaders, pastors, members of the Musanda Musanda Foundation, businesspeople and local residents gathered to honour his achievement.
The event was organised by Peter Mpilo, Cedric Malange and the Sinthumule Athletic Club. The highlight of the celebration was the announcement that President Cyril Ramaphosa had donated 10 bicycles to the campaign.
The total number of bicycles donated now stands at 15, while several businesses and individuals have also pledged to donate more bicycles in the coming weeks.
The celebrations continued on Sunday at Potter’s House Church in Muduluni, where Prophet Charles Mudau and Pastor D D Mudau, together with the Give Me Big Money Foundation, recognised Nefolovhodwe’s selfless efforts.
He received a trophy, a certificate and a cash award in recognition of his commitment to empowering young people through sport.
An emotional Nefolovhodwe said the overwhelming support he had received throughout his journey had reaffirmed his belief that South Africans were ready to rally behind initiatives that transform communities.
“My journey to Cape Town has not been in vain. From the day I left home until I returned, I have experienced nothing but love, encouragement and generosity from South Africans. The warm welcome I received from my own community has humbled me beyond words.”
He thanked Madombidzha Mall, traditional leaders, the Musanda Musanda Foundation, Potter’s House Church and everyone who had supported the campaign.
“I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to President Cyril Ramaphosa for donating 10 bicycles. This generous contribution has given our campaign a solid foundation. This project is about giving children hope, promoting healthy living and keeping them away from crime and substance abuse,” he said.
