Twenty-five goals were scored in the opening eight National First Division League matches that were played at various venues over the past weekend. Amazulu and Moroka Swallows had mixed fortunes. Amazulu beat Witbank Spurs 1-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. Moroka Swallows could not absorb the pressure from Cape Town All Stars and lost 0-2 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
Roggert Nyundu and the former Joe Express killer striker, Thembisani Nevhulamba, scored for Black Leopards when the Thohoyandou outfit crushed Milano United 2-0 at the packed Thohoyandou Stadium.
There was a five-goal thriller at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday. That was where African Warriors beat FC Cape Town 3-2. The visitors from the Free State took a 3-0 half-time lead after Themba Dladla, Mzwandile Qwela and Tamsanga Ngema scored within the first 20 minutes. The newcomers, Mbombela United, got off to a good start when they held Thanda Royal Zulu to a 3-3 draw at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit.
Mbombela were leading 3-0 at half time, following spectacular goals by Victor Shongwe, Inky Masuku and Sinethemba Mnguni. Thanda Royal Zulu did not lose hope as they made a late comeback and scored three goals through Sibongiseni Zuma, Sonke Ntuli and Mfundo Nsele to make sure they went back to Richards Bay with a point in hand.
Also sharing the spoils were Highlandspark and Royal Eagles, who played to a 1-1 draw at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. The other Limpopo side, Baroka FC, came back from Cape Town with full points after beating Santos 3-2 at the Athlone Stadium. Vasco da Gama played to a 1-1 draw with Mthatha Bush Bucks at the Mthatha Stadium.
