The Vhembe community is mourning the loss of one of its oldest and most respected elders, gogo Masakona Murovhi, who died peacefully on 10 April. Her ID book reflects that she was born on 16 June 1905, a few months shy of 120 years ago.

Murovhi, from Muraleni village just outside Louis Trichardt, was a traditional leader who embodied the values of unity, compassion and resilience. Her passing marks the end of an era.

She stopped working as a traditional healer after losing her eyesight shortly before turning 100. Born in 1905, Gogo Masakona witnessed the tides of history shift – from colonial rule to democracy, from traditional homesteads to modern-day technology. Her death has left a deep void in both her family and the village, with many remembering her as a woman of principle and humility who led with a warm heart and a deep commitment to tradition.

Gogo Murovhi is survived by two children, 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her son, Matodzi Mashava (60), said his mother had died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.

"She had been battling eye problems, but she remained strong until the end. She was the heart of our family. Her teachings, her stories, her presence – shaped all of us. Her loss is not only felt by us as a family, but by the entire community," he said.

Mashava said his mother had had three children – one of whom had since died – and had been a loving and devoted parent and grandmother. "She had so much love for her grandchildren. She taught them to stay united and always encouraged them to pursue education – something she herself never had access to. She couldn't read or write, but her wisdom surpassed books," he said.

A woman of modest habits, Murovhi preferred vegetables over meat and lived a simple lifestyle. "She will be remembered as a legend, full of love and leadership. She led by example," he added.

She will be laid to rest at the Indermark graveyard in Block C on 19 April.
