Gondeni Big Cat were crowned champions of the Orimali Projects Soccer Tournament held in Hamakuya this past weekend. They defeated Masisi Young Stars 5-4 in the final, after a penalty shoot-out.
The brain behind the event, "Lebo" Phosiwa, said eight teams from in and around Hamakuya had participated in the tournament, which took place at the Makuya Domboni sports grounds. The champions were awarded R7,000 in cash and a soccer kit. The runners-up received R4,000 and a kit, while the third-placed team received R1,000. Prizes for the player of the tournament and the goalkeeper of the tournament were also handed out.
Nditsheni Nemakhavhani, the captain of Gondeni Big Cat, attributed their victory to hard work and regular practice. He applauded the coach for guiding them to victory and added that the prize money would be used to develop the team.
