The last time legendary gospel musician Asnath Mulaudzi released an album was in 2021, when she introduced Mufuna Pfunzo. She then stepped away from the music scene.

Mulaudzi deliberately took a break to focus on her career as a church bishop. However, she made her much-anticipated return to music this month with the official launch of her eighth album, Uhone Murengululi.

The EP was initially released in September 2024 but was only formally launched on Sunday, 16 February. Judging by the excitement and warm reception it has received, the iconic musician has struck the right chord with her audience.

Just weeks after its release last year, the title track Uhone Murengululi earned her a TSHIMA nomination in the Best Traditional Gospel category. She was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Royal Gospel Music Awards in Gauteng for her contributions to gospel music.

Asked why she took a four-year break, she explained that she was called to ministry in 2020.

"When the call came, I had to put everything aside and focus on building God's church. That led to the birth of the Murengululi Apostolic Church, which now has branches in Lambani and Mphego. After establishing the mother church at Lwamondo Pambani, I realised I couldn't juggle church responsibilities and my music ministry. I had to choose, and I chose my newborn baby—the church," she said.

Now known as Bishop Asnath Mulaudzi, she said her return to music was unexpected.

"One of my fans approached me and urged me to release another music project. At first, I told him I was done with music, but after his persistent calls, I finally gave in—and that was the birth of Uhone Murengululi. I couldn't have made the decision at a better time. My title track was nominated for a TSHIMA. Even though I didn't win, just being nominated meant the world to me. It showed me that I'm still relevant. It was a remarkable achievement and recognition of my work," she said.

She added that she is currently putting the final touches on her upcoming 10-track album with the help of one of the country's most renowned and sought-after music producers, Dubi.
