A Grade 10 learner from Tshidimbini Secondary School, Vhugala Singo, is recovering after being viciously attacked on Monday by a learner from Dengenya Secondary School. His attacker was holding a large knife during the incident which took place near a shopping complex outside school hours.
A video of the attack has surfaced, showing Singo being beaten and nearly stabbed. A family representative, speaking on the matter, said, "When I saw the video, I was hurt. If it wasn't for the driver who stopped the boys, he could have died. They wanted to stab him in the chest, but he blocked the attack with his hand."
Despite suffering injuries, Singo has not received proper medical attention since Monday. His family is frustrated by the lack of support, stating that he waited over eight hours for an X‐ray at the hospital and has not been assisted properly.
She said he is recovering well, but his hand is not functioning properly.
Department of Education spokesperson Mike Maringa confirmed the incident. "The learners appearing in the video are from two secondary schools in Vhembe East. The local circuit will convene an urgent meeting with the two principals to ascertain the root cause and intervene accordingly," he said.
However, there has been no police intervention so far. Acting SAPS Vhembe spokesperson, Constable Pfunzo Ramudzuli, said on Wednesday morning that no case had been opened at the Thohoyandou Police Station regarding the attack.
