The Mjayeli security company donated a soccer kit to the Mashau Grannies soccer team at Mashau on Saturday.

The gogos could not believe their eyes when they received the new kit and a soccer ball. They had been playing soccer in a tattered soccer kit for a very long time.

According to the managing director of Mjayeli Security, Mr Jones Maphalaphathwa, the donation was a way of giving back to the community. "We have been touched by the plight of the grannies, who seemed committed and dedicated to sports but lacked resources. We then decided to buy them a brand-new soccer kit and soccer balls," he said.

He said it touched his team after learning that the old ladies were playing soccer without proper sports attire. He said the old women were a true example of female empowerment because they were displaying that there was no longer a sporting code for a certain gender. " Let's do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset," he added.

He encouraged the elderly to keep up their active lifestyles. "You are a very good example to your children and grandchildren, and we hope that they will follow in your footsteps."

The team captain, Ms Anna Maluleke, said the team was established with the aim of helping the elders to relieve stress and keep them healthy.
