Renowned producer and DJ Gun-Do SA has released a new extended play (EP), a deeply personal body of work inspired by a year of change, challenges and introspection. In an interview he shared insights into the inspiration, sound and collaborators behind the project, which reflects his growth both as an artist and as an individual.

Q: What inspired the creation of this new EP?
A: This EP was inspired by the things I went through in the past year. I had many ups and downs, and making music helped me understand my feelings. Each song tells a small story about something real in my life – like love, change and learning about myself. I also got ideas from things happening around me. I wanted the EP to feel honest and real, so people can connect with it. It shows who I am now and the journey I have been on.

Q: How does this EP differ from your previous work?
A: This EP is different from my old music because I have changed and grown. Before, I stayed in one style, but this time I tried new sounds and ideas. The songs are more personal, and I shared more of my real thoughts and feelings. I wanted to be more honest in my music.

Q: Walk us through the creative process – from concept to completion.
A: The creative process started with me coming up with the main ideas and sounds for the project. I worked on the beats and built the overall vibe I wanted. Once I had the sound I liked, I reached out to different artists who I felt would fit each track. We worked together to bring the songs to life – sometimes in the studio, sometimes by sending files back and forth. After recording, I handled the mixing and mastering and made sure each song flowed well with the others. It took a lot of time and teamwork, but I am really happy with how the project turned out.

Q: You have worked with artists like Makhadzi and Fortunator before. Can we expect similar collaborations on this EP?
A: On this EP, I did not work with Makhadzi, but I did work with Fortunator again. I also worked with Mickeyblack, Mizo Phyll, Racha Kill and Lioness Ratang. They all brought their own style and made the songs sound great. I am really happy with how the EP turned out, and I think people will enjoy the music we made together.

Q: How would you describe the sound and mood of the EP?
A: The sound of the EP is a mix of different styles – like Amapiano, 3 Step and African – but it still feels fresh and fun. Some songs have a strong beat for dancing, while others have a more relaxed or emotional feeling. The mood of the EP changes from song to song, but overall it is full of energy, good vibes and real stories. I wanted the music to make people feel something – whether it is joy, reflection or just the need to move.

Q: Which track on the EP is most personal to you?
A: The most personal song to me on the EP is "Sabela". This song means a lot because it comes from a real place in my heart. It talks about things I have been through and feelings I have had. When I was making it, I wanted to be honest and open, and I think people will feel that when they listen to it.

Q: Is there a central message or theme that runs through the EP?
A: Yes, the EP has a message. I wanted to share real-life stories and emotions. The songs talk about love, struggles, growth and staying true to yourself. I hope when people listen, they feel inspired and connected to the music.

Q: Were there any challenges in the production of the project?
A: Yes, there were some challenges during the production. Sometimes it was hard to find the right sound or get the right feeling in a song. Also, working with different artists took time because of busy schedules. But we pushed through, kept working hard, and in the end, everything came together well.
