Haggai Combined School from Thohoyandou emerged as the champions of the Copa Coca Cola final, after beating Capricorn High 1-0 in the provincial finals played at Polokwane on Saturday.
Capricorn took the game to Haggai in the first 10 minutes. Their speedy forward, Thato Selotola, let them down by shooting aimlessly at the goal finish. Haggai rectified their mistakes soon afterwards. Their diminutive kingpin, Theo Madumi, beat the offside trap but lost possession with only keeper Moremi Kaboya at his mercy.
Omolemo Kganyago, Capricorn's left flank, had his chance in the 25th minute after receiving a brilliant pass from Bethi Siyabonga. He shot aimlessly from close range and the ball went wide.
The referee flashed the first yellow card in the 40th minute. Thato Manaka of Haggai obstructed Thoriso Kganyago and the referee was lenient enough to let him go with a yellow, as the nature of the offence carries the weight of a red card.
The scoreboard was still blank when the teams adjourned for half time. Early in the second half, Haggai introduced Rhanzu Mabasa and Pabalelo Malema.
The only goal of the match came in the 80th minute. Khanimambo Mabunda beat the keeper after dribbling past two defenders in a row.
Haggai will now represent Limpopo in the national championships to be played in Bloemfontein from 22 to 24 September.
