“Heart-breaking to lose innocent lives...”

The manager of traffic at Musina Municipality, Mr Ailwei Mutele, said that losing innocent lives in road accidents that could easily be avoided was heart-breaking.

The manager of traffic at Musina Municipality, Mr Ailwei Mutele, said that losing innocent lives in road accidents that could easily be avoided was heart-breaking.

He was reacting to an incident in which seven people lost their lives when the Toyota Fortuner they were travelling in hit a truck on the N1 road between Musina and Beit Bridge border post on Sunday night.

He said if everyone observed the rules of the road, accidents could be minimised, and people's lives could easily be spared. "We are very concerned about these accidents that are happening on our roads around Musina, especially the ones where people perish. Rules of the road are there to save lives and it is important for all of us to observe them."

Mutele said that, despite the limited number of traffic officers he had, he would do everything in his power to make sure that the rules of the road were obeyed in Musina. "Road users should not be forced to follow the rules of the road, but they should feel that they form part of road-safety initiatives designed to keep our roads accident free. If we can all work together as a team, our roads would be the safest place to be every day."

He added that his team would not overlook any road offence as the country is moving towards the Easter holidays. "Our main responsibility is to make sure that everyone is safe, but we are sometimes forced to issue fines or effect an arrest, depending on the seriousness of the offence."
