Mpheni Home Defenders have advanced to the next round in the play-offs to determine which teams will compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship next season. On Thursday afternoon, Mpheni drew 1-1 against North-West champions, Orbit College, in an extremely boring game, securing their passage to the semi-finals.

Thursday's match left soccer lovers fuming as it did not showcase the true spirit of the game. Both teams only needed a draw to proceed to the next round, and they seemed determined to ensure it would end in nothing more. They resorted to passing the ball between their defenders for extended periods, unwilling to take any risks.

Defenders' head coach, Sydwell Phuravhathu, attributed his team's lackluster performance to nervousness. He acknowledged that they had many opportunities to win the match but failed to capitalize on them.

Regardless, Thursday's victory positioned Mpheni Home Defenders at the top of Group C in the play-offs. Their next challenge is facing Upington City, a team based in the Northern Cape. The first semi-final is scheduled for today, 9 June, to start at 11:00 at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. The second semi-final, featuring Orbit College and Umsinga United, will begin at 15:00.

When asked about their readiness for the semi-final, Phuravhathu expressed confidence in his players, stating that they are razor-sharp and aware of the expectations. He believed that they would reach the final, set to take place on Sunday.

All matches will be broadcast live on SABC TV.
