When Jamaican reggae legend Burning Spear performed at Makhuvha Stadium last month, he touched more than just the hearts of his fans—he also motivated local reggae artists, encouraging them to keep producing the music their fans love.
One artist particularly inspired by Burning Spear's performance is Jah Lady Doris Davhana. "After watching Burning Spear perform, I feel I've learned so much from the Jamaican singer about connecting with reggae fans on stage. Believe me, I'm going to do just that," she said.
Jah Lady Doris was born and raised in Ha Rathidili village, just west of Louis Trichardt. She began her reggae career in 2016 with the release of her debut album, Ndi do mu gwadamela, an eight-track collection featuring popular songs such as Holy Spirit and God, Give Me Power.
In 2018, she released her second album, Kha vha humele kamarani, which translates to Go Back to the Bedroom. The album addresses misunderstandings in marriage, advising couples to resolve their problems peacefully and return to their shared commitments.
Her third album, Ndililela vhananga, won Best Reggae Album at the 2021 Tshima Music Awards.
In 2022, she released her fourth album, Vhutshilo. Although it didn't perform as well as hoped, she remained undeterred. "As a Rasta, I have to keep doing what I love best, which is singing reggae music," she said.
Jah Lady Doris is now on the verge of releasing her next album, awaiting a release date from her producer, Hanedzani Mutele. "All I know is that it will be released in December this year," she shared.
