The village of Elim Mpheni Block A keeps on producing talents who achieve remarkable success in the music industry. The newest kid on the block is Innocent Mbedzi, aka Innobar Truth, a local R&B-Trap-soul-blended-with-hip-hop artist, who is leaving his mark in local music circles.
Innobar has strong aspirations of building a successful career for himself in music. In July 2021, he released his debut 12-track album, titled My Thoughts and You, which unexpectedly took over the streets.
"The idea is to write lyrics about love, influence in career choices and individual beliefs. The feedback from my fans is really positive and inspiring. They love the album's mood - the sound, the beat and the message. A lovely voice and Happy Sunday were especially popular," he said.
The upcoming singer grew up listening to reggae music with his uncle, Daniel Muswazi, on Saturday mornings, and gospel and soul with his aunt, Beauty Muswazi, on Sunday mornings. Thus, he developed a love of music that led him to the church choir when he was in the sixth grade at Muthuhadini Combined School.
In early 2016, he learnt how to record his own songs on his laptop, using a specific software programme, and soon after he moved from church backup vocalist to a full artist. This, however, did not mean that things automatically fell into place for him. In fact, he says, things were really difficult. "I needed to create high-quality music and music videos for my YouTube channel and radio show, but I didn't have the money. As an independent musician, I had to pay for beats and recording, which was quite a challenge to meet," he said.
Innobar Truth was greatly inspired by the late veteran reggae icon, Lucky Dube. "His voice and music lyrics are what made me want to become a singer. I hope that my own music, of which there is still more to come, will have this same effect on fans," he said.
