Keep politics out of hospital security jobs, warns Health Department

The Limpopo Department of Health warns against political interference in security personnel recruitment at healthcare facilities, emphasizing adherence to legal and transparent processes. Politicization could destabilize operations and negatively impact patient care, urging all stakeholders to respect lawful procedures.

With elections approaching, the Limpopo Department of Health has raised concerns over attempts to politicise the recruitment of security personnel at healthcare facilities, warning that interference could destabilise operations and affect patient care.

Department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana said there is often heightened interest from political actors in public service processes during election periods. “While community involvement is important, recruitment processes must follow the law, contractual obligations, and governance procedures. Any interference for political point-scoring is unacceptable,” he said.

He added that the current security service provider was appointed through a transparent Supply Chain Management process, fully compliant with the Public Finance Management Act, National Treasury regulations, and other legislative requirements. The tender was publicly advertised, allowing all qualifying bidders to participate.

Responsibility for recruiting security personnel lies solely with the appointed service provider. Service providers are encouraged to consult recognised community structures such as ward councillors, traditional leaders, and Community Policing Forums to foster cooperation and stability — not to transfer recruitment authority or politicise the process.

Shikwambana warned that any politicisation of recruitment could create instability within hospitals and clinics, potentially affecting patient care. “Healthcare institutions must remain safe, secure, and focused on delivering uninterrupted services,” he said.

The department called on all stakeholders to respect lawful processes and support efforts to maintain professionalism in its facilities. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness, and community partnership while safeguarding the integrity of its procurement and service delivery systems.
