Kwaito maestro Thivhulawi Mphaphuli Ndouvhada, better known as T Man Gavini, has spent the past few years in and out of rehab because of struggles with drugs and alcohol, which brought his music career to an abrupt halt. His last release was the 2010 hit album Mmbwa ya la Inwe a i Noni, after which he largely disappeared from the music scene.
Now, like a cat with nine lives, Gavini is back with a new single, Tshikona, released on 4 September. Recorded at Masana Records in Tshiawelo, the solo track showcases his signature style and reminds fans of the immense talent that has earned him collaborations with artists such as Percy the Postman, Mizo Phyll, Drenko, DJ Nipro, Tshepo Manyisa, and the legendary Irene Mawela.
Reflecting on his comeback, Gavini said his addictions had nearly destroyed him. "I became so addicted that I was like a slave, having to beg. People like Adv Mpho Nefuri even took me to rehab, but I would relapse. During my last stay in Gauteng, I had time to rethink and rebuild my life. I realised I was born a musician, and that's when I started composing again. This new single is just a taste, with a full album in the pipeline."
Gavini added that he was committed to staying clean and reclaiming his place in the industry. "I am back to my life, back to where I belong. The new single proves what I still have to offer. I've performed at local venues and the fans were thrilled. I am born again and the good old times are back," he said.
