From the quiet village of Tshidimbini in Limpopo, Lady Tiana SA is emerging as one of the most distinctive voices on South Africa's contemporary R&B scene. Her journey began in the pews of the Salvation Army church, where music was more than a ritual — it was a way of life.

Raised by a single mother and her late grandmother, she was introduced to singing through church programmes. "I started singing in Sunday school and was often the lead. That was when I realised I was truly passionate about music," she says.

A defining moment came during a church concert. Performing live awakened something deeper. "I felt an undeniable spark. That was when I knew music was my calling — not just a hobby, but a way to express myself."

Her stage name, Lady Tiana SA, pays tribute to her musical inspiration. "A friend who introduced me to studio work used to say I looked and sang like Rihanna. He jokingly called me 'Tiana' because my second name is Thina — it just stuck," she says, laughing. "Rihanna is where I want to be musically. The name now represents a woman working to heal and uplift others through her music."

Lady Tiana's sound is rooted in R&B and soul, with occasional hints of pop, but it is her cultural grounding that sets her apart. "I write in Tshivenda and incorporate Venda expressions to give my music depth. With songs like Mufunwa Ndi Ene and Hope, I created something uniquely local, yet universal," she explains.

Her latest single, SöulMåte, released on 30 May, draws directly from her personal life. "I wrote it for someone special. I was not sure about him at first, but after spending time together, I just felt he was the one," she says. "Most of my songs come from real experiences."

As a young woman in South Africa's music industry, Lady Tiana has had to navigate difficult terrain. "Rejection from fellow artists and event organisers was hard in the beginning, but I have learnt to be patient and trust in God's timing," she says.

She also speaks candidly about inappropriate conduct from some male peers. "Some people in the industry want to mix business with personal interests — offering gigs or features in exchange for intimacy. It hurts. I now avoid such situations the moment I sense it."

Despite these challenges, she has remained focused on her goals, driven by faith and discipline. "I still approach people and look for opportunities, but I no longer let rejection define me."

She is currently working on a new EP, set for release in early July. The project includes features from EasySA, Nèvie Bluè, Jr Player and Daloo Dey. She has also collaborated with EasySA on his upcoming release.

Her creative influences reflect her versatility. "Locally, I look up to Mizo Phyll, Nevíé Blué, Jr Player and Makhadzi. They are fearless — they can adapt to any sound. Internationally, I am inspired by Rihanna, Beyoncé, SZA, Jhené Aiko and Chris Brown. I learn from their style and how they evolve."

For Lady Tiana, the music is only part of the mission. She hopes her story will empower other young girls from rural communities. "I want them to know it is possible to dream big, even if you come from a small place like Tshidimbini. You do not have to change who you are to reach the world."
