Two Ethiopian nationals, Misganu Gethchwe (22) and Tashai Tumebo (18), linked to charges of kidnapping, immigration violations and possession of illicit cigarettes, have not yet been able to give full statements to authorities after it emerged that they could barely understand English and required interpretation during court proceedings.
The duo first appeared before the Waterval Magistrates’ Court last Friday, where proceedings were affected after it emerged that no interpreter was available during both court appearances. The accused later appeared briefly before the Giyani Magistrates’ Court on five counts of kidnapping on Monday, 25 May.
Two other suspects linked to the matter are still at large.
It is alleged that on 7 May, a kidnapping case was opened after a complainant received ransom demands for the release of his brother. In an informal account given to their legal representatives, it is reported that the accused recently arrived from Ethiopia.
On 16 May, police conducted a search operation at premises in Mambedi, Valdezia village. During the operation, officers found the accused at the property and searched the premises. Police allegedly recovered illicit cigarettes, mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of cash, including coins.
Police also rescued five foreign nationals, aged between 18 and 24, who were allegedly found locked inside a room on the premises. Investigations indicate that the victims were allegedly kidnapped separately around the Giyani area, forced into a truck and held captive for approximately 12 days.
A separate case relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes and contravention of immigration laws was also opened against the accused. They previously appeared before the Waterval Magistrates’ Court on those charges, and that matter was postponed to 2 June for further investigation.
The kidnapping matter before the Giyani Magistrates’ Court was postponed to 4 June for a formal bail application. Both accused remain in custody.
