Limpopo police have condemned the latest mob justice killing in the strongest terms.
Police are investigating a case of murder after Mpheni residents set a light an unknown man on Saturday. "The conduct of the Mpheni community can only take us backward. We urge all members of the community to report any criminal activity to the police and refrain from resorting to acts of vigilantism," said provincial police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.
According to Mojapelo, community members apprehended the unknown Zimbabwean national, whom they accused of rape. The mob allegedly took the man to their local community leader, who advised them to call the police, but they refused. They then took the man away and before police help could arrive, they assaulted the man and set him on fire. "The police were called and on arrival at the scene the victim had already burnt beyond recognition," said Mojapelo.
