Learners’ futures brighten with AVBOB container library

AVBOB has provided Djunane Primary School with its 74th container library, significantly boosting literacy in the Elim/Waterval area. This initiative, part of a R36 million investment, offers 3,000 CAPS-aligned books and solar power, empowering students with essential learning resources.

Learners at Djunane Primary School have a brighter future after the school became the 74th recipient of AVBOB’s national container library. The library was unveiled at the school in the Elim/Waterval area on Thursday, 29 January.

The initiative forms part of AVBOB’s long-standing mission to strengthen learner literacy through practical, school-based solutions. At a school where the hunger to learn has always existed, the arrival of books within arm’s reach marks a turning point.

In many rural schools, the challenge is not motivation but access. Safe spaces to read, shelves of age-appropriate books and environments that encourage curiosity are often lacking. The container library addresses this gap, turning reading from an occasional activity into a daily habit.

“A library becomes a cultural cornerstone,” said Nakedi Pilane, director of business development at AVBOB. “When a school has books within reach, it changes more than reading levels. It changes confidence. It changes participation. It changes what learners believe is possible for their lives and their futures.”

Since donating its first container library in 2013, AVBOB has rolled out the project to all nine provinces, investing more than R36 million to deliver 74 libraries and a further R8.3 million to refurbish older ones. Each library is stocked with 3,000 CAPS-aligned books and powered by solar energy.

Pilane added: “Providing a library is only the first step. The real work is what happens next, when learners return day after day, book after book, and start to see themselves as readers.”
