The spokesperson for the Tshivhase royal council, Chief Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, condemned the recent attacks on women in domestic disputes. Since the beginning of this year, several incidents were reported where women had been killed, mostly by their partners.

Just a week ago, the whole country was mourning the death of a young medical intern, Shongile Pretty Nkhwashu, who was found dead in her room at Mankweng hospital. The past week, a 35-year-old woman was found murdered in her rented room in Musina. Her boyfriend is suspected to have killed her, following an argument.

"Why is the rate of killing and abusing of women and children so high?" asked Chief Luvhaivhai. "Enough is enough! Together we can end this gender-based violence against women and children in our society," he said.

Tshivhase emphasised that everyone must work tirelessly to make sure that women and children near them were safe. "We cannot continue to live lives that are constantly under siege, where we are not all enjoying the fruits of our constitutional democracy," he said. "Gender-based violence is one of the most devastating social challenges facing our young democracy. All stakeholders in our society must come together and find ways and means to end this," he said.
