Emmanuel Takalani Nevhungoni's granny, Ms Anna Mukondeleli Nevhungoni, was a hardcore traditionalist who loved and was proud of her Vhavenda culture. Being born into this kind of environment, his own love of his culture developed very early on in his life.

Tshilombe Tsha Vhurendi, as Nevhungoni is popularly known, is fast becoming one of Limpopo's most sought-after singing poets for live performances at functions and special occasions. The journey of the 25-year-old artist from Phiphidi Maha outside Thohoyandou started early in 1998 while he was in Tshiavha Primary School, and today his teachers and fellow learners can be proud of him.

He first realised his potential in 2019, with the release of his debut album, Rilwele Ramakole, which became the launchpad for his successful poetry career. This album was followed by Ri Vhana Vha Africa, released in 2021. His third offering, titled Matshilisano, was released in December last year, and continues to sell very well, contributing to his celebrity status.

"I have finally arrived; just watch the space. My poems are not just entertaining, but they are also very informative. On this new album the message is clear: we have to refer back to how people lived in the olden days. Communities have lost respect, morals and everybody is [only caring about] him or herself. Let's go back to our roots and all the ills we are experiencing today will disappear," he said.

Nevhungoni said that he felt very lucky because of the role his granny had played in teaching him about his culture at a young age as it had shaped his career. "I am very grateful and indebted to her. I also owe it to my fans and everyone who contributed to this project. I promise to give my best all the time."

The album is available on all digital platforms, but those interested in hard copies can contact him directly on 071 240 2894.
