Limpopo family killed in Easter tragedy

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of four Maswanganyi family members and a neighbor, sparking an outpouring of grief in Xikundu village. The respected businessman and his family were en route to a wedding when an alleged illegal U-turn caused the fatal collision.

Grief-stricken mourners are expected to gather in Xikundu village near Thohoyandou this Saturday for the funeral of four members of the Maswanganyi family, who tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident.

Alexandra-based businessman Collins Maswanganyi, his wife Tintswalo, and their two children, Kuhlula and Katekani, died in a devastating crash on the N1 between Mookgophong and Modimolle on Wednesday, 1 April. Their neighbour, Extra Tlukani, who was travelling with them, also lost his life. One surviving child remains in hospital in a serious condition.

The family had been travelling from Alexandra to Xikundu for the Easter long weekend and were expected to attend a family wedding in the village. The joyous occasion has since been overshadowed by tragedy, with the wedding unable to proceed.

Reports indicate that the driver allegedly responsible for the accident was arrested after making an illegal U-turn, resulting in the fatal collision. Limpopo Transport MEC Violet Mathye cited reckless driving as a possible cause, with alcohol and drugs suspected to have played a role.

Collins Maswanganyi was widely known and respected in Alexandra, where he ran a popular tavern that became more than just a business. Despite being in the alcohol trade, he was admired for his discipline, as he did not drink himself. His establishment served as a cultural hub for the VaTsonga community, hosting Makhwaya events that promoted unity, social cohesion, and cultural pride.

Many young entrepreneurs looked up to him for his humility, leadership, and willingness to uplift others, making his loss deeply felt beyond his immediate family.

Traditional leader of Xikundu, Hosi Thomas Shikundu, expressed his profound sadness following the accident. "As a leader, I am deeply hurt by this loss. My community is also very saddened, and I am appealing to the whole village to rally and support the family during this difficult time," he said.

Community leader Nyiko Lovemore Manganyi confirmed that the family has made a decision regarding the funeral arrangements, which will be held at their ancestral home. "The family has decided that their loved ones will be laid to rest this coming Saturday in Xikundu. This is a very painful time for all of us as a village," he said.

Manganyi further called on the public to support the bereaved family. "The family alone cannot cope. We are calling on the business community and everyone to lend a helping hand. Assisting the family will go a long way in easing their pain," he added.

A candlelight vigil was held at Busy Corner in Alexandra on Sunday, where community members gathered in large numbers to pay their respects.
