Limpopo police launch manhunt for toddler's rapist

Police are urgently investigating the horrific rape of a 22-month-old toddler in Maphophe Village, Vhembe district, vowing to find the perpetrator.

The police have vowed to “leave no stone unturned” in their search for the monster who have raped a 22-month-old toddler at Maphophe Village, near Saselamani in the Vhembe district.

The incident was reported on Wednesday, 6 May. According to the police the mother discovered that her child was unable to stand when she woke up. Upon closer examination, she noticed the toddler's left knee was swollen. She rushed the child to a local hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the baby had been sexually assaulted.

A rape case was opened at the Saselamani Police Station and has been transferred to the Giyani Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for specialised investigation.

The suspect remains unknown.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the attack as “deeply disturbing and immoral”. She said the rape of such a young and defenceless child was “an affront to every value we hold as a society”.

“I want to assure the public that this matter will be investigated with the utmost urgency and dedication,” Hadebe said. “We will leave no stone unturned until the perpetrator is identified, arrested, and brought before a court of law.”
