Limpopo police seized 138 R5 rounds and five grenades in Louis Trichardt, and in separate operations, recovered two illegal firearms and ammunition. A 33-year-old man was arrested in connection with a murder and now faces additional charges.

Police in Limpopo have seized a cache of explosives and ammunition in Louis Trichardt, along with illegal firearms recovered in separate operations across the province.

In the Vhembe district, Makhado police responded to information about suspicious items found at a premises in Burger Street, Louis Trichardt, at about 14:00 on Monday. On arrival, officers discovered a plastic bag containing a large quantity of ammunition and explosives. A total of 138 live rounds of R5 (automatic rifle) ammunition and five grenades were seized. The items were reportedly discovered by a community member who alerted authorities.

In a separate operation in the Sekhukhune district, members attached to Masemola SAPS, supported by the Nebo Jane Furse Tracking Team and the Sekhukhune Flying Squad, recovered two illegal firearms and ammunition at Ga-Masemola village in Thabampye.

Police confiscated a shotgun loaded with eight live rounds of ammunition, while a second firearm — a .303 rifle with five live rounds — was recovered at a separate location in Apel Cross.

A 33-year-old man was arrested in connection with a murder case and now faces additional charges of possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Police said investigations into both incidents were ongoing.
