Veteran writer Mr. Tshikhusese Nelson Makuya, 80, known as TN Makuya, recently published a novel titled Tshelede ndi Saṱhane. In this novel, he explores the everyday lives of local people.

Hailing from Makuya village, Makuya developed a love for writing at the age of 25. His childhood was not easy, and he had to sacrifice his own education for that of his siblings. Despite missing many opportunities, he credits his family for influencing his decision to pursue a career as an author.

Makuya has written numerous books, some of which have been included in school curricula. Among his works are A zwi faneli na Dzimbava dza nganeapfufhi, Hu do sala nnyi? (drama), and Maanea.

His awards include a Radio Drama Script Award in 1983, the Best Drama Publication Award from PANSALB in 2005, and the South African Literary Classics Project Award from the National Library of South Africa in 2014 for the best short story, among others.

Makuya's latest book is a collection of short stories. "The collection is about what local people experience daily. I made sure the stories are short to keep the readers engaged. If you're a frequent reader, you can finish one story in five minutes—perfect for reading while waiting for public transport, cooking, or relaxing."

Makuya believes his book will resonate with many. "I've done a good job of telling my life story, and I want it to reach a wider audience, so they can learn valuable life lessons and gain wisdom from others' experiences," he said.

While reflecting on his journey, Makuya acknowledged the people who played a role in his success. "I can't thank everyone enough for encouraging me to keep writing. There are too many to name, but I'm grateful to them all."
