Two boxers from the A-Z Boxing Club in Thohoyandou will participate in the Golden Gloves Development Boxing Tournament at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Sunday, 2 March.
Fhulufhelo Ramaliba will face Pieter Breytenbach in the cruiserweight division, while Tsumbo Mbedzi will trade blows with Ariel Meceraci in the middleweight division.
The boxers' training manager, John "Smoking Joe" Nemakonde, said that it was "time for his fighters to prove to the boxing fraternity that they deserve to compete against the country's best".
"You have to fight and beat the best to be the very best in boxing. This is their ultimate opportunity to show boxing promoters that they deserve regular fights to improve their rankings and compete for national titles," he said.
Speaking to the Limpopo Mirror on Monday afternoon, Ramaliba said he had been training and sparring with Tsumbo Mbedzi for the past two months, and they were now ready to step into the ring.
"It was as if we knew we would be fighting in the same tournament because we started sparring together last month. Our trainer has also adjusted our sparring sessions—we now hit each other as if we're in a real fight," he said.
During the interview, Smoking Joe Nemakonde was preparing to leave for Gauteng with another boxer, Seani Morite, who is scheduled to fight Carleigh Swart in an international boxing tournament at Huddle Park, Linksfield, on Friday, 28 February.
Nemakonde said the two boxers would join him in Johannesburg on Friday, where they would undergo their weigh-in on Saturday morning before their fights on Sunday.
He also mentioned that he has delegated another trainer to assist one of his amateur boxers, Zwidofhelangani Nemutandani, who will be undergoing a test for her professional boxing licence at Magoebaskloof in Tzaneen on Saturday.
"I am very optimistic that, even in my absence, she will return with a professional boxing licence. We have done everything possible to prepare her for the test," he concluded.
