The Mama Rocks Boxing Tourney will be held at Meropa Casino this Friday, 29 September, and boxing enthusiasts are invited to join in the excitement. The tournament is part of Boxing South Africa's Rise of Women in Boxing programme, which aims to unearth new talent, give exposure to female boxers, and foster growth and empowerment within the sport. The first matches start at 19:30.
A fight that will be closely watched is the one between local boxer Lufuno Mutshayi from Tshisele, in the Thohoyandou area, and Adidya Mimu from Malawi. They will compete in the Junior Featherweight division. Mutshayi remarked earlier this week that she had trained hard and promised her supporters that she would win this match. She said Mimu was in for a surprise if she underestimated her. "Nothing is going to stop me from beating Mimu," she vowed.
Another local boxer, Gudani Mudau, also from the Thohoyandou area, will take on Phamela Matunga from Zimbabwe in a Featherweight Division bout. Mudau said she was fit and ready, both physically and mentally, and could not wait to beat her opponent.
Other bouts include Bernice Ferreira and Aratwa Kesemang from Botswana, who will meet in the Lightweight Division. In the Intercontinental Bantamweight Division, Sharadine Fortein will face Patience Mastara from Zimbabwe, while Ngarothe Mugeri and Lilian Molala will test their strength in the Cruiserweight Division. Asanda Semelane and Nothando Ncube will meet in a six-round Flyweight bout, and Asipho Nhluzana and Nomfundo Desree Xaba will fight in the Flyweight four-round division.
Ms. Modipadi Kgasago, boxing promoter and owner of Mama Rocks Promotions, said the fights would provide maximum entertainment. "Limpopo has an abundance of talent when it comes to boxing. We must nurture and promote them to achieve greater heights, so that we can galvanise the future of boxing," she said.
