Sheila "The Poetic Queen" Mathevula empowers youth through mentorship and education. Her recent camp focused on self-worth, life skills, and informed decision-making, leading to increased confidence among participants.

Sheila "The Poetic Queen" Mathevula from Bungeni village is helping young people navigate life through mentorship and education. Earlier this month, the poet, writer, gospel preacher and life coach hosted an Empowerment Virginity Camp for children and teenagers, focusing on self-worth, life skills and informed decision making.

The camp was hosted by Mathevula's organisation, Xalamuka Youth Club, and provided a safe space for participants to speak openly about their thoughts, fears and pressures. Workshops covered self-esteem, healthy relationships and resisting peer pressure. Participants also learned practical skills such as assertive communication, boundary setting, decision making and goal setting. Health education included training on sexually transmitted infection prevention and guidance on accessing health-care services.

Sessions were led by Hlayisani Baloyi, a girls' and boys' empowerment leader, as well as Mfungho Nukeri and Dzunani Nkuna, who specialise in leadership and youth development. Mathevula guided participants as a life coach with experience in adolescent health and relationships.

Parent Basani Baloyi said the camp had had a positive impact at home. "The camp was eye-opening for the children, and the knowledge they gained brought happiness. We believe it will improve their behaviour," she said.

Mathevula said the camp focused on empowerment, education and support rather than control or punishment. "The most important outcome is participants' increased confidence and knowledge, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health, relationships and futures. We wanted young people to feel safe to share their thoughts and pressures without being judged," she said.
