The 30-year-old Mashudu Lucky Makhado's love for music started at a very young age, but he started to seriously delve into music as a rap artist around 2013.
A resident of Magau village, who is now based in Gauteng and is known in music circles as Luka 120, he said that he used to spend his time in recording studios in Gauteng. He added that he started taking his love of music and talent as a singer seriously after an in-house producer requested him to write words for a song they were working on that day. "That was the beginning of my music career," he said. "The project became my first music project ever and it was a hit in Saulsville. I felt more encouraged to record an album of my own."
Break Up Music Vol 1 was recorded and released in 2013 to critical acceptance by music lovers and radio stations. It comprised 13 tracks, which, among others, included Separated, Lufuno (ft. Shony Mrepa), What if, and Thinking about you.
In 2014, Luka 120 wanted to release an album with mature rhythm and beats, so he recorded a 14-track album titled Break Up Music Vol 2. "On Break Up Music Vol 2 I had composed hit tracks such as My girl, Ndi khou di sola, Mudzunga and Wake up in my bed with a stranger," he said.
Luka 120's musical journey has seen him go from strength to strength, to the extent that he spread his wings to the US and connected with some rappers from that side. He has so far released a new album, Masakona, which features 17 American rappers on most songs included on the 16-track album.
"Some of the US artists whom I worked with include Snoopy sofly, Stone, Paxton, Zavion Boothe, Rex, Jamie Wilson, Shyia, Veronique, Gooch, Kahlil Brown, Bang, and Tnt Sonnic," he said. "I enjoyed working with all these different personas."
Some of the tracks to look out for in Masakona are A Naija Girl (ft Thinking Boy and Llooks), I wanna get married in the club, Girl you completes my world, and Elelwani, he said.
Luka 120's highlights in the music fraternity include being signed as an artist with a Los Angeles-based record label, World Movement Records.
