The opening matches of the Khubvi Soccer Tournament were played at the Khubvi Benjies grounds over the past weekend. Four matches were played on Saturday and the remaining four on Sunday.
Lukau Hot Aces secured a place in the quarterfinal stage when they beat Shadani Dangerous Scorpions 2-1. It was evident from the onset that Dangerous Scorpions were going to kiss goodbye to the tournament as Hot Aces were unstoppable. They created numerous scoring chances within the first 20 minutes of the game, forcing the opposition to play with their backs against the wall. It was not surprising when Scorpions conceded three corner kicks within the space of ten minutes.
Khubvi Dangerous Darkies will not take part in the next stage of the competition. They suffered a 5-6 defeat at the hands of Dolphins FC. The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out as the score was 2-2 at the end of the regulation time. In the other match whose winner was also determined in the same way, Musasenda Big V beat Muhuyu Copper Stars 11-10. This after the teams managed to score one goal apiece during the regulation time.
Thenzheni Liverpool could not absorb the pressure from Begwa FC, to whom they lost 2-4. Liverpool were the first to open their account but their stamina vanished with time. Phandulaluvalo are still in with a chance, following their 1-0 victory over Mulodi Freedom Birds.
Makonde FC are still celebrating after beating Mutale Vikings 5-4. The score was 2-2 when the referee blew the final whistle and the winner was determined through penalty shoot-out.
In their tit-for-tat game on Sunday morning, Ficus FC beat Tshandama Try Together 10-9. Rambuda Young Fighters beat Matangari High Aims 5-4 to book a place in the quarterfinals.
