Poetry & Literature
Poetry volumes have abounded in the past few years in the district and each poet came with a distinct voice, even though many artists wrote about the same subject matter.
Just late last year, a new voice emerged and his poetry blazed through the district and beyond the borders of Limpopo Province. The name Lukoko may not sound familiar to those who do not listen to radio stations, but this poet has an amazing talent. He has developed his craft over a decade. He won numerous awards and cash prizes at school level.
"Poetry is a calling - when I am sad, I soothe my heart with poetry; when I am happy, I rejoice through writing and reciting poetry," he said.
This artist was born Ronewa Nengwenda, and attended Lucas Ratshilingwa High School, a school at which his talent as a poet was cultivated. His love for poetry started when he was in Grade 9, in 2008. "A teacher gave us an assignment to write a poem," he said. "I presented my poem to the entire class and my teacher motivated me."
From that point, Lukoko went on to win several poetry prizes.
He has released two poetry songs, Mufunwa and Burning Love. The songs were produced by Hanie Mutele and were released on 8 December last year. The songs are being played on Univen Radio and PhalaPhala FM.
In the song Mufunwa, the artist tries to convey a message of hope, confidence and determination that needs to be demonstrated by those who are in love. "People fail to understand love for what it is," he said. "They complicate things and end up getting divorced."
A resident of Thenzheni village, he said poetry gave him joy and happiness as he was able to reach to the spiritual world of spoken poetry.
He is currently working on his full-length album. He can be reached at 071 344 5935.
