The provincial police and the SABC in Limpopo launched the Nelson Mandela Day 67-minutes campaign at Mukondeni village on Saturday.
They conducted a sod-turning ceremony for the foundation of seven three-bedroomed houses for destitute families.
According to the provincial police commissioner, Gen Fanie Masemola, they noted that impoverished communities became easy victims of crime. He said lack of proper houses in communities also promoted crime as the destitute families were targeted by criminals and community members.
One of the beneficiaries is Mr Frans Ramalokwe (56). He is sharing a mud hut with his wife and nine children. They have been staying in this hut for more than 15 years. He says he is excited that he will have a decent house.
SABC Limpopo regional manager Ms Tshamaano Makuya says the SABC has seen many poor people getting access to better housing facilities through the renowned Celebrity Build a House campaign. "As long as there is still a need out there for better living conditions, we will continue with these campaigns - an endeavour we are so passionate about."
