In their last group-stage match for the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds on Sunday, Joe Maweja gave the ABC Motsepe newcomers, Madridtas FC, a baptism of fire when they beat them 1-0 to finish on top of their stream.
The game was a typical thriller from the onset, with both sides displaying entertaining football. Maweja came close to scoring twice in quick succession within the first 10 minutes. In the first instance it was their centre forward, Elias Ranyaoa, who caused an upset. He received a beautiful pass from Mashudu Mukhari just outside the penalty box and hesitated for far too long to unleash before losing possession.
Ranyaoa turned supplier moments thereafter. He dished out a pre-cooked pass to Mashudu Mukhari, whose volley missed the goal mouth by inches. The Ngovhela-based professional referee, Mr Olani Kwinda, flashed the first yellow card in the 19th minute. Mulisa Ramusia of Madridtas was reprimanded with a card, following dangerous play on Khumudzo Muvhango.
Maweja were the first to effect change to their starting 11. They replaced Thabelo Ntshauba with Xinavona Chauke seven minutes before the half-time whistle. The visitors from Tshifudi responded by introducing Pfunzo Tshikosi for Lutendo Mudau three minutes into the last half.
The goal that earned Maweja victory came in the 67th minute. Mashudu Mukhari blasted in a rocket, following a corner kick that was taken by Khumbudzo Muvhango. Maweja injected more fighting power into their squad by introducing new faces later in the game.
Khongotela Mahlaule of Maweja found himself on the wrong side of the football laws when he was warned with a card for protesting against the referee's decision in the 78th minute.
