Maebani Village's players and supporters flooded the field when the referee blew the final whistle and the fact sank in that their team had won the 16th edition of the Hollywoodbets Easter Soccer Challenge, played at Muduluni on Sunday. The tournament was organised by Mamu Community Development.
The final, between Maebani and Madombidzha, was a nail-biter that had to be decided on penalties after the teams were deadlocked at 3-3. Maebani converted five penalties to Madombidzha's four to clinch the trophy.
In the semi-finals, Maebani beat Manavhela Village 3-1 to book their place in the final, while Madombidzha edged Tshiozwi Village 1-0.
As the new champions, Maebani walked away with R25,000 in prize money, a trophy, 30 gold medals, a soccer kit and hampers. Runners-up Madombidzha received R12,000, a soccer kit and 30 silver medals. The two losing semi-finalists each took home R5,000.
Maebani Village manager Mr Mashudu Mushandana said they had started preparing for the tournament two months in advance. He said he was satisfied with how the players had performed, as well as with the coaches' efforts.
During the tournament, Orlando Pirates legend Jerry "Legs of Thunder" Sikhosana scouted 18-year-old Tshiozwi Village player Una Gwalidi to begin his football career and continue his education in Gauteng.
The Player of the Tournament award went to Maebani captain Dakalo Masha.
