The mayor of the Makhado Local Municipality, Cllr Samuel Munyai, launched the Library Week Campaign in style when he encouraged learners from different schools in the Tshakhuma area to read more.

The launch, which kicked off with an 8 km morning fun walk, took place at Mutsindoni on Friday. During the event, the mayor handed over boxes of sanitary towels to learners from different schools.

Munyai, who is very passionate about education, seized the opportunity to encourage learners to take their studies very seriously. He said that the municipality was very serious about education and to show its seriousness, the main library at Makhado had established 17 satellite libraries at different schools across the municipality.

He further indicated they had established the mayoral bursary fund to assist needy students. "Our wish is to reach out to all areas that are far from the main library and this will only be realised when we have libraries all over the municipality. We are very serious that our youth improve their writing and reading skills," said Munyai.

Mr Khathutshelo Sadiki, the director of Library and Archives in the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, said that the province intended to build more libraries in communities to beef up the present 103 public libraries in the province. He urged traditional leaders to make land available for the construction of libraries.
