Limpopo's musical powerhouse Makhadzi was named Artist of the Year at the 2025 Metro FM Music Awards, held on Saturday night at Mbombela Stadium — a win that has sparked widespread celebration across the country and beyond.
The announcement triggered an outpouring of joy on social media, with fans hailing the Ghanama hitmaker as the reigning queen of South African music. Hashtags such as #Makhadzi and #ArtistOfTheYear dominated the trends list, with thousands of supporters sharing video clips, tributes and congratulatory messages.
This latest accolade crowns what has already been a landmark year for Makhadzi, who earlier received Best Dancer of the Year at the 2025 Trace Awards in Zanzibar and was honoured at the 2024 BET Awards with the Viewer's Choice: Best New International Act. These milestones reflect her growing global influence as she continues to showcase her cultural roots through music and dance.
The Metro FM Music Awards, one of South Africa's leading commercial music ceremonies, returned this year with a star-studded programme recognising excellence across genres. Makhadzi's victory in the fan-voted Artist of the Year category is widely seen as a breakthrough moment for rural and marginalised talent in the music industry.
Known for her high-energy performances and genre-blending sound, Makhadzi — born Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona in Ha-Mashamba — has become a symbol of resilience and inspiration, particularly for young people in Limpopo. Her journey from selling CDs at taxi ranks to receiving national and international acclaim has resonated deeply with fans, who see their own aspirations reflected in her rise.
In her home district of Vhembe, communities marked the win with celebrations at taverns and family homes, underscoring the pride the region holds for one of its brightest stars. Prominent voices also added their praise. Phalaphala FM presenter Sharon Ravele posted on X: "We are proud of you Makhadzi! Limpopo is on the map!" Chief Livhuwani Matsila of the Matsila Foundation said: "Her story is one of inspiration. She continues to fly the flag of our province with pride."
Makhadzi is expected to embark on a Southern African tour, with confirmed performances in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Her management team has also hinted at upcoming international collaborations and a documentary scheduled for release later this year.
