Muawedzi Makungo from Ha-Makhuvha Miangaelani has published his first poetry book, a collection rooted in Venda culture and the teachings of elders. Released three weeks ago, the book is titled Matanzu maswa a tikwa nga malala, meaning "The young are guided by the old." The title reflects the central theme: young people grow through the guidance of previous generations.
Most poems speak directly to the youth, urging them not to forget their roots. Makungo calls for a return to traditional values, where respect and discipline shaped daily life and helped young people grow with purpose. "If you know where you come from, you will know where you are going," he said, explaining that the book aims to reconnect young people with their identity and highlight the value of their language and culture.
Makungo said he had been inspired to write after noticing his generation drift away from Venda traditions. "Many young people no longer care about their roots. Respect is gone. As a young person, I see that we are more focused on alcohol and drugs," he said.
The opening poem, Iwe u nyi?, challenges readers to reflect on identity, belonging and responsibility.
Balancing schoolwork and writing has been a challenge, but Makungo credits self-discipline for keeping him grounded. He is currently completing a Technical Support NQF6 learnership at LearnEx Training Institution, carefully separating his studies from his writing.
Through Matanzu maswa a tikwa nga malala, Makungo hopes to inspire young readers to embrace their heritage and carry forward the values and wisdom of their elders.
