Man arrested for allegedly aiding escapee

A man was arrested in Limpopo for allegedly helping an escapee remove handcuffs and damaging state property. He faces charges of defeating justice and malicious damage after police traced him following the escapee's re-arrest.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in Muledane village, Limpopo, for allegedly assisting an escapee and damaging state property.

The suspect faces charges of defeating the ends of justice and malicious damage to state property following an incident on Friday, 20 March.

According to police, members of the Thohoyandou Task Team were conducting an operation when they re-arrested an escapee who had fled from lawful custody.

Further investigations revealed that the escapee had allegedly been assisted in removing his handcuffs. Police traced the suspect to his home in Muledane, where he was arrested.

“The suspect allegedly cut off the handcuffs and later disposed of them,” police said.

The handcuffs were later recovered at a residential property in the same village. The suspect is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police said investigations are ongoing.
