HLANGANANI - A resident of Madobi Village, Derrick Khosa (30) has appeared in the Hlanganani Magistrates' Court on Monday on a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. The incident to which the case is related took place at Madobi village last Saturday night at about 20:00.

According to the spokesperson of the police at Hlanganani, Insp Falaza Vuma, it is alleged that on the night of the incident the accused came back home from a drinking trip and went straight into his hut. Moments later he came out of the hut and went to his 47-year-old mother.

The statement indicates that at that stage his mother was busy feeding her baby. The accused then furiously questioned the victim as to who opened his hut and ate his food. Before the mother could respond to the question, the accused allegedly produced a butcher's knife and told the complainant that her days were numbered.

The woman then ran away carrying the baby with her. The accused allegedly chased her and allegedly stabbed her twice in the back, while she was running. She then entered into the neighbour's house and the accused turned back.

The complainant later proceeded to the local Majosi clinic for medical treatment, where she spent the night.

The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested the following morning. He appeared in court on Monday and the case was postponed until today, Friday August 16. Although the accused was granted bail of R1000, he was still in custody at the time of going to press.
