A Siloam community is gripped by fear after a well-known barber was brutally murdered. Police arrested a suspect, Livhuwani Mushamula, as residents call for further action against a "group of thugs" terrorizing the area.

Residents of villages around Siloam have been dealt a blow following the brutal murder of a well-known local barber in an incident that has left the community gripped with fear.

The 19-year-old barber, Bukize Gadi, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and residing in Siloam, died after being stabbed. The incident occurred in the Siloam business area, next to shacks along the R523 public road.

According to information, the attack took place in the early hours of Saturday, 28 March, at about 01:00. Residents who spoke in low tones believe the incident could have been sparked by a dispute over a woman.

His death has deeply affected the community, where he was widely known and relied upon for his services. Many residents described him as hardworking and dedicated to his trade.

Community leader Mr Samuel Lusunzi described the young man’s death as a major loss.

“The boy was an example that young people can make it in life, no matter the odds. He was committed to his work and had built a strong bond with the community, even though he came from far away,” he said.

Lusunzi, however, alleged that the murder was not an isolated act.

“One thing we know is that the suspect, a notorious ex-inmate who served many years in prison, did not act alone. There is a group of thugs terrorising this community. We urge the police to do their job and arrest all those involved. We are not safe, and we fear that crime will drive away businesses, leading to job losses,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident, saying police in Siloam had arrested a 34-year-old man, identified as Livhuwani Mushamula, in connection with the killing.

Mushamula appeared in Thohoyandou Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, with his case postponed until Tuesday, 7 April, for further police investigation. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

Police are appealing to members of the public who may have information that could assist in identifying the deceased’s next of kin to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer, Sgt Vhutshilo Walter Nefefe, on 076 239 1113, or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be shared via the MySAPSApp or at the nearest police station.
