According to the spokesperson of the police in the area, Capt Moatshe Ngoepe, the deceased, Jugde Ngobeni (27) paid his girlfriend a visit at her Takgalani home on the day of the incident.
Ngobeni was a resident of Rotterdam village. While they were at the girlfriend's home, a fierce argument ensued between the two. The centre of the argument could not be established. During the argument, the statement indicates, the deceased produced a firearm and shot the girlfriend in the head.
The statement further indicates that the deceased concluded that the girlfriend was dead. He then turned the firearm on himself. He shot himself in the head and died instantly. The girlfriend was still in a critical condition in hospital at the time of going to press.
In a separate incident, the police in the area have opened an inquest docket, following the death of a 27-year-old man, Eric Mathebula. The incident took place at the Kuhrula village in the Lulekani area last Saturday at about 15:30. According to the police statement, the deceased had had an argument with his wife the previous day.
During the argument, the deceased allegedly assaulted the wife with various objects. The woman decided to report the matter to the police later that night. The police went to arrest him at his home on the day of the incident. The deceased saw the police from a distance and left his home, going to another street.
While he was in this other street, he heard the information that the police were after him and he decided to go back home. Upon his arrival back home, Mathebula allegedly took a piece of rope and hanged himself from the rafters of the roof of his house. The police found his body hanging there when they arrived and were investigating the matter further at the time of going to press.
