Police are searching for a Zimbabwean national after a brutal assault on his girlfriend in Gaba Tshivhuyu Village, Vhembe District. The 42-year-old victim was allegedly attacked with a beer bottle and hand hoe, sparking outrage over gender-based violence. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Constable Rihlampfu.

Police in Tshaulu near Thohoyandou have launched a manhunt for a Zimbabwean national accused of carrying out a savage attack on his girlfriend, leaving the Vhembe community shaken and fearful.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, 20 April, at around 17:30 in Gaba Tshivhuyu Village, saw a 42-year-old woman allegedly assaulted with a beer bottle before being struck on the head with a hand hoe in what authorities describe as an attempted murder.

According to police, the victim was at home when her boyfriend returned from a local tavern demanding money. When she told him she did not have any, he allegedly flew into a rage and launched the violent attack.

Despite her injuries, the woman managed to flee the house and seek help from neighbours, who quickly contacted emergency services. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

Police are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Constable Rihlampfu, on 072 226 4508 or 082 565 7270.

The attack has sparked outrage and renewed concern over escalating levels of gender-based violence in the Vhembe District. Community members say such incidents have become alarmingly frequent, with many women living in constant fear.

Local resident Mavhungu Mutavhatsindi expressed shock and anger, saying the brutality of the attack has left the community deeply unsettled.

“We are no longer safe even in our own homes, where we are supposed to feel protected. We heard he was abusive, but we never imagined it could go this far. Police must find him and ensure he faces justice,” she said.
