Well-known musician Bishop Dr Roxley Masevhe was honoured as the gospel singer from Vhembe who has been in the business the longest during the second Royal Gospel Music Awards at Entshonalanga Church on Saturday, 3 August.
Since starting his music career in 1977, Masevhe has received more than 200 awards. Despite a challenging journey, he credits the unwavering support of his fans for keeping him motivated. "I would not be doing justice if I forgot to thank everyone who stood behind me," he said. "This award encourages me to work even harder and create classic music in my indigenous language, representing my people."
Reflecting on his career, Masevhe said he had never imagined music would become his lifelong calling. "Here I am today, bagging awards I never dreamed of. This shows I am doing a good job, singing songs that empower and relate to people's lives."
He added that fan support was the true measure of an artist's success. "Their votes speak volumes about how they feel about my music. I thank all my fans from the bottom of my heart."
Masevhe made headlines earlier this month when the National Prosecuting Authority announced that rape charges had been reinstated against him. He is facing four counts of rape and is scheduled to make his first reappearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on 29 August.
Masevhe said the upcoming trial would not derail him, and he would continue performing.
