Local long-distance runner Nditsheni Mathobo made history by becoming the only known and documented athlete to run from Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban to Thavhani Mall in Thohoyandou. He finished the gruelling route in only 18 days, after setting off on Monday, 21 July.

When he arrived at the mall shortly after 14:00 on Friday, crowds of fans sang songs in praise of his historic achievement.

Before entering the designated reception area, Mathobo showed he still had energy by doing push-ups and dancing to the blasting music of Makhadzi, South Africa's music queen.

People were so excited to see their overnight hero cross the finish line that they crowded the area like packed sardines, making it extremely difficult — if not impossible — to take clear photos.

In an interview with the Limpopo Mirror on Sunday afternoon, Mathobo said he was very happy to have fulfilled his long-time dream of running from Durban to the Vhembe District. However, he expressed disappointment about the lack of support from individuals and the corporate sector for his mission to raise funds for people living with chronic illnesses.

"Some of the people I was working with claimed my goal was to raise money for victims of gender-based violence (GBV), which is not true. The sole purpose of this project was to raise money to help those living with chronic diseases," he said.

Speaking about the marathon itself, Mathobo described it as extremely stressful and difficult. "Running more than 1,080 km in two weeks without enough sleep was a real challenge," he said.

He admitted there were moments when he considered abandoning the project. But, driven by passion and determination to help those suffering from chronic illnesses, he pushed on until the end.

Although he received no financial support from the government, Mathobo expressed gratitude that Collins Chabane Municipality has promised to assist him with funding to support his vision.

He concluded by acknowledging the support of senior traditional leader Thovhele Vho Ramovha, who has also pledged support for the project.

"[With the support of] one of the most influential traditional leaders and a noted philanthropist in the country, I believe my achievement will not be in vain," he said.
